For those of you who fell in love with their debut album, Crazy For You (2010), give their newest LP a listen. Although the band has stepped back a little on their lo-fi sound, as well as the crazily repetitive lyrics, there’s definitely some of the previous Best Coast present in The Only Place.
The biggest difference, however, is how clean and polished their tracks sound. I’ve read around the web, and they’ve been recording in a professional studio. Not as fuzzy anymore. It’s not good, nor bad - it’s just different.
The lyrics. Bethany Consentino preached about laziness and yearning for loved ones during the summer in the previous record. But in The Only Place, the lyrics seem to be centered around how great California is (I guess it’s the “only place” to live) surrounded by a sense of indifference and letting bygones be bygones.
Take the song “Last Year” for example: "And when I go out, I don’t feel anything, I just keep spending my money / One day, you’ll be gone, and then I’ll have to write another song"
Everything doesn’t sound as… well, lazy. I remember when I would listen to Crazy For You - It’d be a scorcher outside, and I’d be sitting in my friend’s garage drinking iced tea. It was the prefect fit. But when I listen to this album, I feel the urge to go on a sunny drive with the windows down, cranking out these tunes.
This album is basically a fresher, cleaner Best Coast - as opposed to the fuzzy, gritty, drowsy duo we heard in 2010. I urge you - give it a listen.
Freaking out over how good this new Best Coast album is. A “review’ is coming up soon. Oh God. In all honesty, it’s just gonna be all of my thoughts combined into a hot steaming mess of crap. Comin’ soon.
Alright, so according to TIME magazine, there’s been a 71% increase in “chinplants,” (surgery to increase the chin line) from 2010 to 2011, which is "more rapid growth than breast augmentation, liposuction and Botox combined."
Wait, this is a real thing? Do women actually find huge chins attractive?
sitting here at my desk, with two lit candles flickering light onto my laptop. But man, this weekend has been great - good times with friends, and many pleasant surprises. So right now I’m just relaxing with Best Coast’s new album, “The Only Place” which is perfect by the way. I now have a soundtrack for the end of spring, and all of summer (like I did two summers ago with their previous LP).
Can I just lay down on a beach and watch the waves (Wavves) ?
Not much different from my last post like this: Still procrastinating, slacking with schoolwork, awaiting graduation and the summer. Except, this one encompasses prom - it was surprisingly fun, and definitely the best dance I’ve been to in high school (I’m glad it was the last one ever). What’s funny is that I’ve had a date to every dance except this one. Turns out not having a date is a blast. I guess you’re not tied down, haha. I was up for a full 25 hours, no regrets. Best night of my senior year!
Oh, and here’s what I’ve been listening to:
Beach House - Teen Dream
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach (Still)
And other random things, like Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On” (the ultimate after-party, post-awesome-event-song ever), and the Everybody Loves Raymond opening theme. Yes, you read that correctly.
I’m just trying to have fun these last 22 days of high school. Already getting in that college mindset, I can’t even fathom AP testing. I just can’t wait till this:
