Yet again, the Aussie Open starts off the grand slam tour in Melbourne. Being the second most populous city in Australia, Melbourne has no problem in attracting local Aussies to the courts. The cool, cerulean blue courts contrast with the summery heat that beams down on the players. Rather ironic.
The players who come to Melbourne are hungry for competition. They want to start the year off well. Rafael Nadal, the current holder of the US, French, and Wimbledon titles, is one slam away from completing his grand slam tour. Last year, he had to retire from the Australian Open due to knee tendinitis injuries. Coming off a long streak of wins, Rafa is probably the most “hungry” out of all the players. His determination is unparalleled.
Roger Federer. Current holder of the Aussie Open title. Last year he defeated Andy Murray in a three set battle (6-3, 6-4, 7-6). Roger is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. A record 16 grand slams, married, and a set of twins on top of that, this man’s done it all. Question is, can he stop Nadal in his quest to complete his grand slam tour? Hopefully we’ll see in the final.
As for the women’s bracket, I find it hard to predict the champion. There are too many even contenders in the tournament. Wozniacki, Henin, Clijsters, are all even in skill in my eyes. I just hope Venus doesn’t make it past the fourth round, she’s too sensitive. However, my heart lies with Maria Sharapova. <3
